I always prefer the horizontal layout as not always the replies are many lines long and there are always a lot of unused white spaces in the thread page.

Also I would prefer icons with hover text instead of text in the post bit.

And props to @RaxBoard to put icons (or colored circles) representing the user groups in mobile instead of the full banner in some styles. That was a very good UI/UX decision.
